My love language is puppy chow, and this brownie-flavored muddy buddies recipe might be my favorite version yet! It’s the same easy melt-and-shake process as standard puppy chow, but I used a box of brownie mix to coat it so it would have plenty of fudge-y flavor. I just use the microwave to melt the chocolate and peanut butter, coat the Chex cereal using a resealable bag, then let it cool until it’s ready to eat!
Brownie Mix Muddy Buddies
I’ve made more puppy chow and sweet snack mix recipes than I can count, but I always have room for more in my heart. My kids and I love fresh-baked brownies, so I wanted to try out some brownie mix as a coating. It takes the place of powdered sugar, giving the rice Chex cereal a beautiful (and addicting) layer of chocolate. I still use melted chocolate chips and creamy peanut butter, so it tastes a lot like my peanut butter brownies. It only takes 5 ingredients and about 10-15 minutes of kitchen time to make this chocolate-y Chex. So it’s perfect for weeknight cravings or any party that needs a little sweet snack!

Brownie Batter Puppy Chow Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups brownie mix *
- 1¼ cup dark chocolate chips **
- ⅓ cup creamy peanut butter
- 3 tablespoons salted butter
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 7 cups Rice Chex cereal
Instructions
- Place the brownie mix in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second increments, stirring well between each heating, for 3-5 minutes or until the mixture reaches 165℉. Set the heat-treated brownie mix to the side.2 cups brownie mix
- In a second, large microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and salted butter and heat for 60 seconds.1¼ cup dark chocolate chips, ⅓ cup creamy peanut butter, 3 tablespoons salted butter
- Stir the mixture well and continue heating in 15-second increments, if needed, until smooth and completely melted. Add in the vanilla and stir well.1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Gently fold in the Rice Chex cereal, until completely coated with chocolate. Be careful not to crush the cereal pieces.7 cups Rice Chex cereal
- Place ⅓ of the brownie mix in a large resealable plastic bag.
- Add the Chex mixture.
- Pour the remaining brownie mix on top of the Chex cereal and seal the bag.
- Shake the bag well, until the Chex mixture is completely coated with brownie mix.
- Spread the puppy chow on a large baking sheet lined with aluminum foil or parchment paper, and let it cool completely before serving.
Notes
- Heat-treating the brownie mix ensures the flour is cooked for this no-bake recipe.
- Layering the brownie mix and the Chex inside the bag helps to coat each piece evenly.
- If you prefer, you can skip the peanut butter.
- Add powdered sugar for a classic puppy chow coating.
- Let puppy chow cool fully before storing or serving, otherwise melted chocolate will create a bit of a mess.
How to Store
Once cooled, store brownie batter puppy chow in a sealed bag or airtight container. Keep it at room temperature in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week. For longer-term storage, refrigerate the snack mix for a few weeks, or freeze for 2-3 months.
