When I’m craving something sweet, warm, and just for me, this peanut butter chocolate chip mug cake is my go-to. It’s the perfect single-serve treat with a soft, fluffy crumb, packed with rich peanut butter flavor and melty chocolate chips in every bite. Best of all, this easy peanut butter mug cake comes together in my microwave in under 10 minutes!

Making a chocolate mug cake is one of my absolute favorite simple indulgences when my kids are out of the house. And now this peanut butter mug cake is quickly climbing the ranks! Made with creamy peanut butter and gooey chocolate chips, it tastes just like a warm peanut butter cup in a mug.

I love how this chocolate chip peanut butter mug cake comes together with simple pantry staples in under 10 minutes. It’s perfect when I want a cozy, single-serve treat without the fuss of baking a full cake. The rich peanut butter base, melty chocolate chips, and soft, fluffy texture make this cake in a mug an instant favorite. Warning: you’re going to want to make this quick dessert after dinner every night!

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter *
  • 2 tablespoons milk chocolate chips **

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a 12-ounce microwave-safe mug.
    ¼ cup all-purpose flour, ¼ teaspoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, ¼ cup milk, ¼ cup creamy peanut butter, 2 tablespoons milk chocolate chips

  • Using a fork or small whisk, mix well until the batter is uniform.

  • If you desire, sprinkle a few more chocolate chips on top.

  • Microwave for 2 minutes, or until the center is cooked through.

Notes

*You can really use any type of peanut butter or nut butter here. Creamy, crunchy, almond, or even Nutella would be delicious!
**I like milk chocolate chips, but semisweet or dark will also work for a pop of chocolate. For an all-peanut-butter cake, swap the chocolate chips for peanut butter baking chips.
Tips:
  • Grease your mug before adding the ingredients so that it doesn’t stick.
  • Make sure you use a microwaveable mug in this recipe.
  • Don’t fill the mug all the way to the top, as the batter will rise as it cooks. Place a plate under your mug in case there is any spillage.
  • Microwave wattages can vary a lot! If your cake is underdone in 2 minutes, try 15-second bursts until just cooked through. Avoid overcooking to keep it soft and moist.
  • Use your fingertips to test the top of the cake; if it’s a little sticky, it’s perfectly cooked through and ready to eat.
  • Make this mug cake gluten-free by using 1:1 gluten free flour alternative.
  • Let cool slightly before enjoying.
Baking Instructions: If you don’t have a microwave, you can bake these mug cakes in the oven. At 350°F, they will take around 25 to 30 minutes.
Storage: Store peanut butter chocolate chip mug cake tightly wrapped with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Prep: Gather the short list of ingredients for this mug cake recipe. Spray the inside of a 12-ounce microwave-safe coffee mug with nonstick spray, or lightly coat it with melted butter or neutral oil.
