This Milky Way caramel puppy chow is sweet and delicious! I tossed Chex in a chocolate and caramel sauce, coated it in powdered sugar, and mixed it with chopped candy bars to create this addictive puppy chow recipe. It’s perfect for using up that leftover Halloween candy!
Milky Way puppy chow is my take on classic puppy chow with the caramel and chocolate flavors of a Milky Way candy bar! This easy treat is perfect for movie night whether you stay in or go out. Just store the puppy chow mix in a small plastic bag and transport it wherever and whenever. My whole family loves this delicious sweet treat!
What’s in This Milky Way Caramel Puppy Chow Recipe?
- Chex Cereal: I used Rice Chex, but corn also works to make this puppy chow crispy.
- Chocolate Chips: Add chocolate flavor and help bind the sugar to the cereal. I like semisweet chocolate chips, but milk or dark also work.
- Kraft Caramel Squares: Chewy caramels work best to coat this puppy chow. I do not recommend using caramel sauce, as it’s not the right consistency.
- Butter: Unsalted butter helps the caramel spread and makes it rich and flavorful.
- Powdered Sugar: Coats the puppy chow to keep it from being too sticky.
- Milky Way Candy Bars: I like to chop them up and add them for extra flavor and texture. Minis also work well.

How to Store
Store leftover Milky Way caramel puppy chow in an airtight container or Ziplock bag at room temperature for up to 1 week, in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let thaw on the counter before enjoying cold or at room temperature.
Tips for Success
- Cutting the butter into small cubes helps it melt faster in the microwave before the caramels start overheating.
- Do not overcook the microwaved ingredients! If it’s too hot, it will burn and not taste right. Additionally, it could melt and scald the Chex Mix, ruining the entire consistency of the mix.
- Honestly, there’s no rule as to how much powdered sugar goes into your puppy chow. While this recipe calls for 2 cups, you may need more than that as you toss your ingredients in the bag. You really want to make sure you have enough powdered sugar to cover every single piece of this mix, so don’t be afraid to add a little more as you go. The more sugar, the better, right?!
