Homemade Peanut Butter Cookies for Dogs

Whenever I’m baking cookies for the humans in the house, I make sure my pups don’t feel left out. These peanut butter cookies for dogs are safe, tasty, and so simple to make at home. I use whole wheat flour for extra fiber, coconut oil to support healthy skin and coat, and good-quality, xylitol-free peanut butter for peace of mind.

My recipe for homemade dog treats uses just 4 simple ingredients: flour, coconut oil, baking powder, and peanut butter. No fillers or preservatives, just real, recognizable ingredients you can feel good about. They keep well and freeze beautifully, so I always make a big batch ahead of time.

Some readers have mentioned to me that they quite enjoy the flavor of these dog cookies, and so do their kids. I’m happy to report, these cookies are perfectly safe for pups and humans alike.

Adjust the Texture

Every pup is different. Some like crunchy treats, while others prefer softer bites. When making your peanut butter dog cookies, you can easily customize them: bake longer for extra crunch (great for dental health) or reduce bake time slightly for a softer texture that’s easier on older dogs’ teeth. It’s an easy way to tailor 4-ingredient peanut butter dog treats to your pup’s unique needs.

Notes

*I recommend whole wheat flour when baking treats for dogs, but rice flour and coconut flour are great wheat-free options too.
**Important Note: Some peanut butter contains xylitol which is toxic to dogs. Make sure there is none in the peanut butter you are using.
Tips:
  • Peanut butter is my dog’s favorite cookie flavor, but plain pumpkin puree or pureed sweet potatoes can be used instead.
  • I used an apple corer as my cookie cutter. Depending on the size you want, you can use any cookie cutter or even a pizza cutter to make squares.
  • Every ingredient in this recipe is safe for human consumption. Without sugar, these treats may not be as tasty to you as they are to your fur baby, but you can eat them too. In fact, little ones may enjoy them as a healthy snack option.
  • My rule in life is always moderation. I recommend starting with only 1 treat to see how your dog tolerates it or if they may have any adverse reactions (possibly to wheat flour). If there are no reactions, you can give your dog 2-5 treats a day, keeping in mind that the treats are about 50 calories each if made the same size as pictured
Storage: Store peanut butter dog treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

How to Make Peanut Butter Dog Cookies Step by Step

Prep: Gather the short list of ingredients for this homemade dog treat recipe. Preheat your oven to 375°F, then line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside. Bring the coconut oil and peanut butter to room temperature (if they aren’t already) so that they’re easier to mix.

Ingredients for peanut butter dog cookies.

Measure out the Dough: In a large bowl, combine 2½ cups of whole wheat flour, 1 cup of water, ½ cup of peanut butter, ⅓ cup of room-temperature coconut oil, and 1 tablespoon of baking powder.

Ingredients combined in a bowl.

Mix the Dough: Mix ingredients with an electric hand mixer just until a dough forms. I find that mixing by hand with a rubber spatula is quite easy too.

Chill the Dough: If the dough is warm after mixing, let it chill in the fridge for 20 minutes. Then remove the ball of dough from the bowl and place it on a floured surface.

Disc of dough on a floured surface.

Roll the Dough: Roll out the cookie dough until it is about ½-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter, knife, or small round cup to cut out the dough into pieces. You can make any shape or size you like–just keep in mind larger treats will need a little longer to bake. For crispier treats, roll the dough a bit thinner.

Dough rolled out flat.

Bake the Treats: Place your cut peanut butter dog cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until they begin to turn golden brown.

Cool: After baking, allow peanut butter dog treats to cool completely before storing or feeding them to your pups!

How to Store

Store peanut butter dog cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let thaw at room temperature before serving.

Hi Sharon, have you checked your oven temp with a thermometer recently? It sounds like it may run a bit hot! In that case, lowering the temperature was the right call!

I loved the idea of this recipe! However, i make a BUNCH at one time and have it stored in a ziplock plastic bag and while they were hard and crunchy, now they are soft.. any ideas as to how to store them? I made them for my clients this year and their pups.

There are a few reasons they may have turned soggy. Did you put them in the Ziplock before they had fully cooled? That can trap moisture. Storing in the fridge can also cause them to go soft after a few days. You can try turning the oven temperature down and baking them for a bit longer to dry them out more thoroughly. You can also place the soft treats back in the oven at 150-200°F for 1-2 hours to dry them back out.
