How to Make a Dulce de Leche Milkshake
Be sure to see the recipe card below for full ingredients & instructions!
- Place ice cream and other ingredients into a blender, and blend until smooth.
- Swirl caramel sauce into the glass then pour mixture in.
- If desired, top with whipped cream and drizzle the caramel sauce.

Dulce de leche translates to “caramelized milk” or “milk jam” in English. It is a Latin American confection made by slowly heating sugar and milk over a period of several hours.
While they are similar, caramel is made primarily from sugar with a little bit of butter and cream added at the end, while dulce de leche is made primarily from milk with sugar added and is creamier and less sweet than traditional caramel.
You can find it at the grocery store, but it is simple to make yourself. All you need is a can of evaporated milk and the directions here.
A thick milkshake should have a high ratio of ice cream to milk. Too much milk will make your milkshake runny, so add another scoop of ice cream if it’s too thin.
You sure can! While vanilla lets the dulce de leche shine, this milkshake would also be great with chocolate ice cream or a fruity ice cream, such as black raspberry or strawberry!

What is Dulce de Leche?
Dulce de leche translates as sweet milk. It’s a South American sweet milk, cooked until it looks like, and may taste slightly similar to, caramel. It’s often used as an ingredient in dessert recipes or can be drizzled on top of desserts when they’re done.
Storage Instructions
While I highly recommend enjoying your dulce de leche milkshake immediately after making it, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 week. Let the milkshake thaw on the counter for about 20 minutes before enjoying.
Variations
- Chocolate Dulce de Leche Milkshake: Replace some or all of the vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream. Drizzle some chocolate sauce into the glass before serving.
