Cake Batter Puppy Chow
When it comes to puppy chow, sometimes you have to step up your game. What I love most about this cake batter puppy chow is how ridiculously quick and easy it is. It comes together with just 5 ingredients and takes less than 20 minutes from start to finish. No stovetop, no baking beyond a quick flour safety step–just melt, mix, and snack. It’s one of those recipes that’s easy to scale up for a crowd, and it always disappears fast. The combination of sweet white chocolate, crisp Chex, and nostalgic birthday cake flavor is totally addictive.
This is one of those recipes that makes me feel like a birthday party magician. It’s low-effort, high-payoff, and totally customizable. I’ve swapped in different sprinkles for holidays, used chocolate cake mix for a twist, and once even mixed in crushed freeze-dried strawberries for a fruity spin. Whether you’re making it for your kid’s party or sneaking handfuls during nap time (hi, it’s me), this cake mix puppy chow always brings the fun.

Heat-Treat the Flour for Safety
Cake mix contains flour, a raw ingredient that shouldn’t be eaten uncooked. I always bake mine for a few minutes before using it in this birthday cake puppy chow recipe to kill off any bacteria and minimize risk. It’s a simple way to make this recipe safe for everyone to enjoy.

How to Make Birthday Cake Puppy Chow Step-by-Step
Heat-Treat the Cake Mix: Spread 1 cup of yellow cake mix in an even layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for 5 minutes, or until the temperature reaches 160°F. Set aside to cool. Pour 8 cups of Rice Chex into a large bowl.

Melt the Chocolate: Melt 8 ounces of white melting chocolate according to the package directions. Pour the melted white chocolate over the Chex, and gently stir to fully coat the cereal.

Add the Sprinkles: Wait a couple of minutes for the chocolate to cool slightly, then gently stir in 2 tablespoons of rainbow sprinkles. This will help prevent the sprinkles from melting and bleeding all their color into your Chex mix. Trust me, it doesn’t look pretty!

Coat the Chex: Add in the cooled yellow cake mix and ¼ cup of powdered sugar, and gently toss the Chex to fully coat them in the mixture.

How to Store
Store leftover birthday cake puppy chow in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. I recommend the refrigerator to keep the chocolate from melting.
